You guys.

I’m really excited about this product.

I rarely drink anything but water, but I cannot stop thinking about this drink and how much I love it!

It’s birch water, which some have hailed as the new coconut water. I tried this particular brand, Sapp, which I found at Mariano’s, one of our local Chicago grocery stores. The other day, I made a special trip there because I was thinking about these small bottles and had to have one. Sapp has only been around about a year, but is growing quickly. It’s easy to taste why.

The nutritious water tastes like a slightly sweet, earthy tea (yet not quite like tea in a way I can’t fully explain; you just have to taste it for yourself) and contains vitamins and minerals (like vitamin C, calcium, potassium, phosophorous, manganese, magnesium, sodium, zinc and iron), amino acids, proteins and xylitol, a natural sweetener. A diuretic, birch water may help eliminate toxins from the body by cleansing the liver and kidneys, and help draw excess uric acid out of the body, implicated in gout. It’s particularly rich in manganese, a mineral that is important in bone-building and bone metabolism, as well as calcium absorption. The mineral also helps the thyroid gland and sex hormones function properly, aids in managing blood sugar levels, and has a hand in the regulation of fat and carbohydrate metabolism. Claims abound: that is can lower cholesterol, assist in weight loss efforts, reduce cavities, relieve joint pain, speed up wound healing and brighten/clear up skin.

It has a long history as a health elixir in the Baltic countries, Russia and Scandinavia, where people drank this liquid as a detoxifying tonic, often for medicinal reasons.

Those claims all seem alluring and appealing. But honestly, even if none of them were true, I would still buy birch water because it tastes.so.good. There are three flavors of Sapp to choose from: Original, Rosehip and Nettle. My favorite is the original, but I’m a fan of all three. My only complaint is that the bottles aren’t bigger.

If you sip on Sapp, let me know what you think!
